Lighting words that change an AI render
A glossary of lighting terms for AI image and video prompts - rim light, golden hour, chiaroscuro, practicals - with what each one does to the picture.

If you only add one thing to your prompts, make it light. The same subject reads as warm, lonely, clinical or dramatic depending almost entirely on where the light comes from and how hard it is. Models know the vocabulary photographers and cinematographers use, so borrowing it is the quickest way to control mood.
Direction
- Front light - flat and even, hides texture. Good for clean catalogue shots, dull for drama.
- Side light - shows texture and shape. "Light from the left" is often all a still life needs.
- Backlight - the source behind the subject; outlines it and makes haze, steam and dust glow.
- Rim light - a thin bright edge around the subject against a dark background. The signature look of product shots on black.
- Top light - a single source from above. Moody and theatrical, with deep shadows under every edge.
Quality
- Hard light - crisp shadows with sharp edges. Midday sun, a bare bulb, a spotlight.
- Soft light - gentle shadows that fade out. An overcast sky, a large window, a softbox.
- Diffused - softer still, almost shadowless. Fog, a sheer curtain, a light tent.
Time of day
- Golden hour - low, warm sun just after sunrise or before sunset; long shadows.
- Blue hour - the cool, even light just after sunset; city lights start to show.
- Overcast - flat, soft and cool; good for natural colour.
- Night with practicals - light coming only from sources in the scene: lamps, signs, screens.
Named looks
- Chiaroscuro - strong contrast between light and dark, like a Baroque painting.
- Low key - mostly dark, with light on the subject only.
- High key - bright, white and airy, few shadows.
- Neon noir - wet streets, coloured signage, deep shadows.
- Volumetric light - visible beams through haze or dust.
Putting it together
An old brass telescope on a wooden desk in a dark study, a single warm desk lamp from the right, deep shadows, dust in the lamp beam, low key, chiaroscuroA glass of sparkling water on a white marble counter, bright soft window light from behind, high key, fresh and airy, commercial photographyNotice how each prompt names one main source, a direction and a quality. That is usually enough. Piling on "golden hour, neon, studio lighting" gives the model contradictory instructions and a muddy result.
Light in video
For clips, light can move too: "sunlight sweeping across the room as clouds pass", "a lighthouse beam turning through fog", "neon sign flickering". Moving light is one of the cheapest ways to make a short clip feel alive. See the text-to-video guide for more.
